District Announcements
Congratulations to Commended Scholar Melissa Halstead!
South Side School District is pleased to announce that Melissa Halstead been named a Commended Scholar in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship program.  About 34,000 commended students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Commended students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the scholarship program by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test.

In addition to being a Commended Scholar, Melissa was named a 2014-2015 Scholar through the National Hispanic Recognition Program. Each year, the NHRP honors about 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from over 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT.  Congratulations Melissa on your wonderful work!

National Merit Scholarship Program
Recently officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.  Tyler Chiccarello, South Side senior, was one of those honored with this distinction.  These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.  Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.  About 90% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
About 1.4 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.  The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U. S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.  We congratulate Tyler and wish him well as he competes for the Merit Scholar title!
