Class of 2025 Inductees:
Dr. Michele (Frazier) Kuszajewski
Michele's career is a testament to unwavering dedication, visionary leadership, and a profound commitment to advancing nursing practice and education.
Michele's journey began as a student at South Side, walking the halls like so many. Then, in her early days as a staff nurse in intensive care and emergency departments across the country, Michele demonstrated a tireless work ethic and a passion for critical care. Her journey from a diploma in nursing to a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Pittsburgh speaks volumes about her relentless pursuit of knowledge and excellence.
Michele's impact extends far beyond direct patient care. As a Flight Nurse for STAT MedEvac, she brought her expertise to the most urgent situations. Her transition into education, as a Clinical Instructor and later Assistant Director of the Simulation Program at Duke University School of Nursing, truly set her apart. She became a pioneer in healthcare simulation, shaping the future of nursing through innovative teaching methods. Her extensive list of publications and international presentations on simulation and emergency nursing highlight her influence on a global scale.
Dr. Kuszajewski's leadership is evident in her numerous committee assignments, from the Advance Practice Nurse Committee at UPMC to the Nurse Executive Council at Vidant Medical Center. She has been a driving force in curriculum development, simulation advisory boards, and initiatives focused on improving patient safety and outcomes. Her recognition with multiple Duke University School of Nursing Staff Excellence Awards and the Frances Mauney Community and Collaboration Award underscore her profound impact on her colleagues and community.
Today, as the Quality and Education Program Manager for Duke Life Flight, Michele continues to elevate standards and inspire those around her. Her career is a beacon of what is possible when passion meets purpose.
Glenn McDougal
Glenn's journey with South Side began as a student, graduating in 1981, and has since evolved into a lifelong dedication as a teacher, coach, and parent.
For 31 years, from 1990 until his retirement in 2021, Mr. McDougal shaped young minds as a health and physical education teacher across elementary, middle, and high school levels. Beyond the classroom, his presence on the court and field was legendary. He served as head coach for girls' basketball, 7th and 8th grade boys' basketball, and, most notably, football.
Coach McDougal's football legacy is etched in South Side history. From 1992-2000, and again from 2012-2015, he led the Rams with distinction. The pinnacle of his coaching career came in 1999, when he guided the Rams to an undefeated season, earned Coach of Week presented by the Pittsburgh Steelers and National Football League, was Runner-Up for Pennsylvania Coach of the Year and won a Pennsylvania Class A State Championship with his team. His return to the helm in 2012 brought renewed success, including MAC Coach of the Year Award in 2014. He lead the team to their first winning record and playoff win in years. He also garnered the Big 7 Conference Coach of the Year Award five times.
Beyond the accolades, Glenn's true impact lies in his character. As his daughter, Kaitlin McDougal, beautifully stated in his nomination, "Glenn McDougal does not want this to be about him." He is a humble man who believes in hard work and seeing others succeed. His greatest thrill in coaching has been watching his players "grow into young men and seeing them become good citizens."
Glenn's commitment to the community extends to volunteering with South Side Little Rams football and SSAO baseball, and contributing to projects like the South Side Nature Trail and the elementary school playground. His passion for coaching and teaching has directly impacted countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on students, colleagues, and the entire South Side community.
