SCHOOL DELAYS & CLOSINGS

Cancellation and Delay Information for South Side Area School District
As we proceed through the winter months, we must be prepared for snowy and extremely cold weather conditions. We wanted to give you some background on how decisions for two-hour delays or cancellations are made so you can better prepare. Please know that the safety of our students and staff is most important and much consideration is taken when issuing a delay or cancellation.

Communication
When school is cancelled or delayed it will be listed on KDKA, WTAE and WPXI news channels, the District Website, and phone calls sent out by One Call. Please check multiple locations to ensure that you have the accurate information for South Side. Based on forecasts, we may be able to make our decision the evening before any schedule change. Sometimes, however, we need to wait until the morning of to make a call to ensure student and staff safety.

Cancellations
School will be cancelled when roads are impassible with measurable snow or icy conditions as determined by the Superintendent, South Side Bus Garage, and Township Road Crews. School may also be cancelled when temperatures dip below a negative 2 or 3°. This determination will be made by the real feel temperature based on the actual temperature and the wind chill factor. Example: with a temperature of negative 2° and no wind chill factor, school may be in session. However, with a temperature of 5 degrees and a wind chill of negative 15°, school may be cancelled.

Two-Hour Delays
Two-hour delays are usually called based on road conditions. While communication with the Superintendent, South Side Bus Garage, and Township Road Crews are made to determine two-hour delays it is rare to have a two-hour delay for cold temperatures. The District may call a two-hour delay for cold weather only if there appears that there will be considerable warming by the start of school. Please keep in mind South Side Bus Garage is in constant communication with Township Road Crews to determine the safety of our roads.

Bus Procedures
Expect your bus to be a few minutes late on very cold mornings. If it is cold out and students have to wait for a bus, your child may wait in in his or her home until the bus arrives. We understand this will extend each stop a few minutes which will ultimately slow each route.

After School Activities
All after school activities will be reviewed and determined on the day of a school closing if the event/activity will be held, cancelled, or delayed until another day.
