MIDDLE SCHOOL CONCEPT

What is a Middle School? 
The middle school concept is based on the unique needs of the adolescent learner. The effective middle school is designed to consciously structure the learning program with an emphasis on and a respect for the developing adolescent.  

Sixth Grade Program

Sixth grade provides a transition from the elementary to the increased levels of independence and responsibility provided in the middle school.  The sixth grade instructional program is characterized by the following: 

  • integrated thematic units

  • ability grouping for math and reading 

  • teacher collaboration for planning and remediation of students 

  • flexible scheduling of students to provide support, reinforcement, or enrichment in particular subject areas 

  • frequent and consistent monitoring of student performance.

Seventh Grade Program

The mission of the seventh grade team is to develop the total individual into a responsible, self-confident, self-directed learner, who has the ability to think effectively and problem solve, with concern for others and themselves.  This is accomplished by providing a learning environment that fosters continuous growths, daily interaction with peers and the seventh grade teachers.  Goals of the seventh grade team include the encouragement and development of: 

  • students with high self-esteem

  • students who are self-directed learners

  • students with problem solving and decision making skills

  • students with concern for themselves and others.

Eighth Grade Program

The mission of the eighth grade team is to provide students with the opportunity and support to develop a solid foundation of social and educational skills. The goals of the eighth grade team are:  

  • to encourage daily attendance

  • to aid students in the transition to high school

  • to develop tolerance for individual differences

  • to build a basis of self-responsibility that students can carry into future

  • to increase academic success

  • to engage students in higher order thinking skills

  • to foster an understanding about the relevance of school as it pertains to each student's life.
