A Globally Connected, Innovative, Learning Community
Online Virtual Learning Days begin March 25th: Getting Started for Families

Dear South Side Families,

First and foremost, we want you to know how greatly we miss our students. We miss the laughter, the learning, and the energy the students bring to our campus. This has been a difficult time as the directives from the Governor and the PA Department of Education have been changing rapidly; however, we have been ready for some time now to implement our plan for Continuity of Education. The district campus will continue to be closed through and including Monday, April 13th and all school activities originally planned for April will be cancelled.

In order to best serve our community, our plan for online learning will now begin Wednesday, March 25th, 2020. What does that mean for you and our students? All learning will now take place online through our Learning Management System, Schoology. Please see below for grade level expectations for student learning and attendance.

Student Work

Students will have lessons and assignments in ELA and Math, and may have lessons in Writing, Spelling, Social Studies and Science. Grades K-5 will continue to follow their daily specials schedule. The specials day will be communicated by the teachers on the Schoology Daily Agenda update. The Specials day does not change during this time. Specials assignments may be found in Schoology for grades 2-5 and a combination of take home packets and Schoology updates for grades K-1.

Starting Wednesday, March 25th, specials will be DAY B for grades 1-5 and DAY C for Kindergarten.

Grades PreK-1

All lessons and assignments will be completed per the home packets provided by your classroom teacher.  Wednesday will be Day 1 of the packets. Students are also encouraged to read daily for 20 minutes. It is recommended that parents of our youngest learners login to Schoology each day to check for updated materials or messages from teachers. As time moves on, we may start using Schoology as families get more comfortable. Additionally, we will share information regarding when more packets/materials are available as we will exceed the initial 10 days of materials. If special accommodations are needed or an extenuating circumstance arises, please contact your child’s teacher(s).

Grades 2-5

Students in grades 2-5 will access all assignments and lessons within their Schoology accounts. Students must login each day in order for the day to be counted towards their daily attendance. If special accommodations are needed or an extenuating circumstance arises, please contact your teacher(s).

Grades 6-12

Students should go through their schedule as they normally would and complete an assignment for each class. The lesson plans and assignments are accessible through Schoology. If you need special accommodations or an extenuating circumstance arises, contact your teacher(s).

CTC students will be contacted by phone to discuss CTC program continuity. Seniors can rest assured, while this situation has caused a serious disruption to a very important and memorable time in your life, we will have a graduation ceremony and are currently investigating prom options regardless of how long we have to wait for this situation to pass. These are unprecedented times, and there will be hiccups – but we are confident we can work through all problems with you as we work hard to provide the best educational experience possible in the given circumstances.

Student Attendance

Student attendance will be tracked using Schoology and by the completion of class assignments.

Students in grades 2-12 are responsible for logging into Schoology each day of online learning. Attendance will be monitored through Schoology which tracks student login. Teachers of students in PreK-1 will be contacted by their teachers to monitor student attendance.

Lunch and breakfast delivery will continue for our students at the previously shared stops and times. If you cannot make any of these stops, please contact food service at 724-573-9581 ext. 2636 or by email [email protected]  before noon to arrange for delivery.

Contact Information and Assistance

Please know that the administrators and secretaries as well as the tech staff will all be working behind the scenes to help meet any needs that arise. Additionally, our school counselors and school nurses will be available if needed. If you call the school, please leave a message as the voice mails will be automatically forwarded to the appropriate personnel.

Teachers, principals, counselors, nurses, paraprofessionals, secretaries and the technology staff will all be available. All teachers will be updating their Schoology classroom pages by 9am each morning.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to the school via email, Schoology, or at 724-573-9581 with any questions or concerns. Parents and students that need technical support should send an email to [email protected] and the tech department will get back to you as soon as possible.

South Side is excited to provide the best possible education during this unprecedented and difficult time. We are all working hard to meet the academic, social, emotional and technological needs of our school families. We are ready for this opportunity for the South Side School District and the entire South Side Community to shine in this time of uncertainty. We will all work together to make this online plan a success.

Thank you and stay healthy!
