Service Learning

Service Learning is….

Projects that are designed to meet a need in the community and enhance or reinforce curriculum goals.

It provides structured time for students to reflect on their service and learning experiences through a mix of writing, reading, speaking, listening, and creating in small and large group and individual work.

In our program, projects are student developed and directed.
  • Students make the decisions (good and bad)
  • A teacher/facilitator is there to teach/guide them to the information to make educated decisions.
What is a service-learning project?

A service learning project connects community service to standards within the curriculum.

What is the difference between community service and service-learning?

The key difference is the link to the curriculum. Service-learning is community service projects used to enhance learning of a standard within a curriculum.

The Five Components of Service-Learning

  1. Preparation: Students prepare to learn while serving!
  2. Service: Students serve and learn!
  3. Reflection: Students reflect upon the service-learning experience!
  4. Evaluation/Assessment:
    1. Students and the community evaluate the project!
    2. Students are graded for their efforts and participation!
  5. Celebration: Students and faculty celebrate the project and share with the community and school the service experience!
**Service-learning is a teaching methodology whereby students use their newly acquired classroom academic skills to help solve a real-life problem or meet a need in the community. Through hands-on experiences, students apply what they learn in the classroom to the real world!

Service-learning is more than community service! It is a method of teaching and an experiential experience for students to advance their skills and knowledge! Through service-learning, the community becomes a classroom!
