|Alternative Education Program|
It is the goal of the South Side Alternative Education Program to provide a different learning option for those secondary students who are unable to benefit from current district practices and formats. The program’s educational philosophy is best described as developmental in nature and student centered. This attitude naturally fosters the use of best practices and constructive experimentation as it relates to instruction, curriculum, and evaluation. The philosophy also implies that the program is dynamic. Thus, seen as a complex and adaptive system, new opportunities are constantly being created by the system. While South Side Area School District has an impressive record of student success, each year a small number of students drop out, or refuse to accept or benefit from our best efforts. Until recently there was little that could be done for these students. However, with financial support from benefactors and local and state funding, our district is in a position to offer an alternative educational program aimed at helping these students. Alternative Education classes are held five days a week from 3:15 pm to 6:15 pm and follow the School District calendar. The program has a content teacher for the four major subjects of Math, English, Science, and Social Studies, each being taught one night per week. Due to the uniqueness of this program other subjects are incorporated such as Industrial Technology, Health, Psychology, Driver’s Education, Computers, and Drafting. Counseling and Independent studies are available on an individual basis. Students have also been involved in supplementary work by volunteering their time with community collaborated services. The Alternative Program is positively designed for “at-risk” students.
