Eligibility

The Board recognizes the value of athletic events, extracurricular activities, and field trips in enhancing and enriching the school experience for the children of this school district. The Board will make school facilities available and provide appropriate staff for the conduct of social events within the school facilities which have been approved by the Superintendent and/or the building principal. For social events which take place outside school facilities, approval is required by the Board.

As voluntary participants in athletic events, extracurricular activities, and field trips, students shall be held responsible for compliance with rules set forth in advance for their conduct, and infractions of those rules will be subject to the same disciplinary measures as are applied during the regular school program.

Participation in school events is not a right and may be denied to any student who has demonstrated disregard for the rules of the school.

While education is a right, students are seen as ambassadors for the South Side Area Schools when they participate in athletic events, extracurricular activities, and field trips. Grade requirements, attendance records, and adherence to school rules and regulations are held to be legitimate exercises of authority. Excluded students will be given alternative assignments if applicable. Students may be excluded from social events, class trips, and field trips due to academic, attendance, or disciplinary deficiencies as per the guidelines below:

1.  Attendance – Students who report later than 11:00 a.m. are not permitted to stay after school for any reason. In order to stay for an after school activity, students must be in school for four class periods or two blocks. Students who have a doctor’s excuse must bring in the excuse before the scheduled event or practice, and the doctor will be contacted to verify the excuse. Any exceptions to these attendance guidelines will be at the discretion of the administration.
2.  Grades – Students failing 1 full credit classes are NOT permitted to play in a game/match. They are NOT permitted to sit on the team bench during a game/match. The student is also NOT permitted to travel with the team to an away game/match. The student is only permitted to practice with the team at the coach’s discretion. They may also utilize the after-school tutoring program.
3.  Discipline – Participation in extracurricular and/or athletic events may be denied to any student who has demonstrated disregard for the rules of the school. Students may be excluded from social events, class trips, athletics, and/or field trips due to academic or disciplinary deficiencies at the discretion of the administration. Disciplinary consequences may also be assigned for infractions during athletic and/or extracurricular events at the discretion of the administration.

Activity Conduct

At all times students should display good sportsmanship.  We consider all athletic opponents as guests and treat them with all the courtesy due guests.  Non-compliance will result in the removal of persons from school grounds and possible charges of disorderly conduct filed with the Pennsylvania State Police.
